What are some artists whose most famous songs are actually covers of other songs?
Off the top of my head, I can think of the following:
- Orgy (covered "Blue Monday" by New Order)
- Soft Cell (covered "Tainted Love" by some northern soul artist)
- Quiet Riot (covered "Come on Feel the Noize" by some random band from the 70s)
What are some other artists whose most famous songs are actually covers?
Answer: Here's a little list I put together. In some cases the song might not be the *most* famous song by the artist, but it is one of the three or four most famous songs.

I need to find songs with a subtle theme of travel in them. Any suggestions?
My friend and I send mystery themed CDs to each other, and the theme Im doing this week is travel. Id like to include songs about methods of travel, places to go, and also make sure I use some really good songs in the process. BUT the main thing to remember is that its supposed to be a mystery, so the theme cant be too obvious. Hes supposed to have to really try to figure it out. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know a rock song which was written by someone but given to someone else to perform?
I know Elton John had a songwriter, and JJ Cale wrote the song Cocaine by Cream (but I dont know much about JJ Cale). Any others?
Answer: Leonard Cohen wrote a lot of lyrics/ poetry that were turned into songs by other performers. He recorded some of them himself,(Hallelujah is one) But I don't think he ever recorded God is Alive Magic is Afoot, he pretty much wrote that for Buffy St Marie.

Is Bell Bottom Blues by Derek and the Dominos one of the saddest songs ever?
Consider the backdrop at the time, with Eric Claptons love unrequited, thus leading him to write Bell Bottom Blues. The song is just stunning, better than Layla, although I used to think different ive now come to my senses. However, everytime I listen to it, while thinking of the situation in which it was written, it breaks my heart and I well up. Is it one of the best blues songs ever?
Answer: Just another song he wrote because he couldn't get hold of Patti Boyd...I would never call it a blues song either...
as with Tears in Heaven, this is a man who has made a lot of money by cashing in on his 'private' grief.....class act, eh?
By the way Josh, JJ Cale wrote Cocaine, not Clapton, its just another Cover Clapton decided to use.....

Answer: I'm not sure if it's an autobiography or not but the only book I could find on Cale is "The Very Best of J.J. Cale". It's pricey though, at $74.95. I always loved the swampy "Crazy Mama", with that soft wah-wah and lazy vocals.
Hes got a lot more than his songs turned into hits by Clapton and Skynyrd.

Whats a good scale to play a solo to the JJ Cale and Eric Clapton song "Ride the River" in?
Normall I just use the blues and pentatonic scales. Sometime I even play it in the major but whats another scale that sounds good? Or whats the actual scale that they solo in?
Answer: frankly clapton tends to stay in the pentatonics as well. His solo in that one is mostly using both the C major and C minor pentatonics and alternating licks between the two back and forth to keep it fresh.
