URBAN HUNTING SEASON FOR TRASH AND TANK GUNS
In a city that has raised civic boosterism to a fine art, even a campaign against littering takes on grandiose proportions. Mayor William Donald Schaefer declared war on trash early this month after driving around the city and finding it absolutely filthy. The Mayor is known for weekend prowls in his chauffeur-driven car through streets and alleys to scout trouble spots that may have escaped the attention of City Hall bureaucrats. The three denominations of Lord Baltimores silver coins are the groat, or fourpence, the sixpence and the shilling, and all have a portrait of Cecil Calvert on the obverse and the family crest of arms on the reverse surrounded by the inscription crescite et multiplicamini (increase and multiply). A fourth type, a copper alloy penny, is extremely rare and is thought to have been only a pattern piece, a prototype of a coin that never reached production.
