HARGRAVES--Gordon S. Skip, died on April 19, 2012, peacefully at the age of 80. Survived by his deeply loved wife Margaret Magavern and their children Gordon S. Hargraves, Jr., Samuel M. Hargraves, Elizabeth Hargraves Mandy, Anna Hargaves Hall and six grandchildren. Attended Haverford School, Graduated from Exeter Academy (49), Princeton University (53) and Harvard Business School (57). He served in the US Navy as an officer on a Destroyer from 1953-1955. His multifaceted career began in advertising, and after two decades with Manufacturers Hanover Trust, he joined The Cold Spring Harbor Biological Laboratory as Director of Planned Giving. A generous man full of warm spirit and great adventure, a wonderful sense of humor, and devoted to his family, he was also an active and dedicated member of the community, serving diligently on the Boards of St. Johns Church, Huntington Hospital, St. Johnland Nursing Center, The Caumsett Foundation, The Whaling Museum, East Woods School, and The Masters School. As was noted when he was honored for Special Services to St. Johns Church on the occasion of its 175th Anniversary in 2010, He is someone who we deeply love and who also loves us. A memorial service will be held at the Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club at noon on Saturday, April 28th. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Johns Church in Cold Spring Harbor, The Caumsett Foundation, St. Johnlands Nursing Center, The Cold Spring Harbor Biological Laboratory, or The Maine Coast Heritage Trust (for the Black Island Preserve).

COX-Bert George B.G. Cox of Rye, New York and Boca Grande, Florida died on Monday, April 16, 2001 in Rye. His death resulted from complications due to a stroke. He was 80 years old. Mr. Cox was with The Joseph & Feiss Company, Inc., Americas oldest clothing manufacturer and a former division of the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation in New York and Cleveland for 45 years serving in numerous offices including President from 1970. He was Chairman from 1986-1990 after purchasing the company from PVH and later selling it to Hugo Boss. He was a two-time president of the Clothing Manufacturers Association of America (1983-1985, 1988-1990) and president of the Mens Fashion Association from 1980-1982. In 1979, Mr. Cox represented the clothing industry as part of a U.S. trade mission in Cairo, Egypt. He began his industry career in 1946 as an assistant buyer for the May Co. in Denver, Colorado. Mr. Cox was a naval fighter pilot serving in World War II from 1942-1946 reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross medal in 1946. He served on the Bennington, Shangri-La, and Yorktown aircraft carriers. Prior to enlisting, he was an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Cox was born on October 18, 1920 in Billings, Montana. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1946 earning BS degree in Business. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was a member of The Apawamis Club and American Yacht Club, both of Rye. He was also a member of the Boca Grande Club and Boca Bay Pass Club, both of Boca Grande, Fl. A resident of Rye for the past 40 years, he is survived by his wife of 52 years, Leone Larsen Cox; two daughters, Anne Zahringer of New York, N.Y., Karen Mandy of Rye; a son Robert H. of Stamford, CT and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held for B.G. Cox on Friday, April 20th at the Rye Presbyterian Church. Boston Post Road in Rye at 10:30 in the morning. She was the oldest of three children and lived a life of privilege in Budapest that ended with the German invasion of Hungary. As the result of an extraordinary deal that was brokered by her father, the family was saved and spent the war in Portugal. After they received their American visas, the entire family emigrated to New York where she became active in Hungarian causes. With energy and intellect, she helped to establish the Hungarian House, on the Upper East Side, an institution committed to sustaining the rich cultural life of the Hungarian emigre community. She also played an important role in helping families emigrate from Hungary, particularly after the Hungarian revolution of 1956, coordinating efforts to help them with jobs and resettlement in the United States. As the secretary to her father, she was deeply involved in all aspects of his financial career including investments in New York real estate and providing venture capital for Gulf and Western, before it became a public company. SHEFFIELD--Carolyn Blair, aged 99, died on January 13th at her Manhattan apartment. She was the great-granddaughter of Ezra Cornell, founder of the University in 1865. Her devoted and beloved husband, Frederick Sheffield, died in 1971. Known for her generous nature, she surrounded herself with loving friends and enjoyed conversations with everyone she met. A 1928 graduate of The Brearley School, she was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club. She is survived by her three children, James Rockwell Sheffield, Margaret Blair Sheffield, and Ann Cornell Sheffield, and four grandchildren, Jamie Sheffield, Sarah Sheffield, Mandy Roth, and Jon Roth, and two great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 4th at 3pm at St. James Episcopal Church, Madison Avenue and 71st Street. Attended Haverford School, Graduated from Exeter Academy (49), Princeton University (53) and Harvard Business School (57). He served in the US Navy as an officer on a Destroyer from 1953-1955. His multifaceted career began in advertising, and after two decades with Manufacturers Hanover Trust, he joined The Cold Spring Harbor Biological Laboratory as Director of Planned Giving. A generous man full of warm spirit and great adventure, a wonderful sense of humor, and devoted to his family, he was also an active and dedicated member of the community, serving diligently on the Boards of St. Johns Church, Huntington Hospital, St. Johnland Nursing Center, The Caumsett Foundation, The Whaling Museum, East Woods School, and The Masters School. As was noted when he was honored for Special Services to St. Johns Church on the occasion of its 175th Anniversary in 2010, He is someone who we deeply love and who also loves us. A memorial service will be held at the Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club at noon on Saturday, April 28th.
