Essie kept their house key in her little purse but the front door to their building wouldnt even open unless they both pushed on it hard. Essie and Amber, Amber and Essie. Essie is small and Amber is tall. Their mother works late, sometimes even on Saturdays. Their father is in jail, arrested for forging his bosss signature on a check after he lost his job. Like so many children of working or absent parents, the two sisters have a network of caretakers. Their mother cares for them all day on Sunday, and Helen downstairs watches them on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Mondays and Wednesdays after school they go to Mimi, their big cousin, who plays cards and dances with them when she isnt talking to her best friend Russell / on the phone. They call their Uncle B. when something needs to be fixed. And yet, as these poems make poignantly clear, like so many modern children Essie and Amber also spend a good many hours alone together in their empty apartment, whispering, quarreling, reading library books and writing poems, taking care of themselves and each other. They are good at it. Because Essie is smart and Amber is brave, they know just what to do when the bed theyve been jumping on collapses. Brave Amber is the first to go up the stairs to ring the doorbell of the turret apartment where the new girl lives. Smart Essie knows how to use the scissors to even out her sisters hair after Amber cuts off her braids, to send to Daddy / so hell be sure to remember me. And when their Mama was at her job / and their Daddy was far away / and the house felt dark, both girls know to hold each other in Best Sandwich: it turned the room friendly from strange and they could breathe each others breath in and out and in and out till they heard at last their mothers key in the big front door. The book begins with colored-pencil portraits, two of Essie and two of Amber. Interestingly, Vera B. Williams draws the backs of their heads and then their faces, a touch that gives a sweet familiarity to the portraits, as if were seeing the sisters as they see each other. Scattered throughout the poems are simple pencil sketches that will interest but not distract small readers, followed by a colorful album of scenes from the story. The poems themselves are vignettes with wonderfully direct titles (No I Wont / Yes I Will, Whoops, Amber Says What They Did When the Doorbell Rang). In each one, in language that is childishly simple and yet vivid with detail, Williams touches on something authentic about the girls and their lives, whether it is the sound of their voices in a quarrel or at play, their delight in a new friend, or the vicissitudes of their familys financial straits: Wouldnt it be great, Amber asked Essie, if you could squeeze a milk carton like an orange so you could get more milk even when its empty. She graces both girls with resilience and pluck without ever sentimentalizing them or their circumstances, and she captures the fear and the loneliness, the burden, of their premature self-reliance without ever losing sight of their still childish capacity for joy and playfulness. In her Caldecott Honor Book A Chair for My Mother, Williams beautifully showed how a childs need to offer comfort is at times as essential as her need to receive it -- how in the community of family, especially stressed, hard-working family, a childs ability to contribute to the common good can be as confirming, and reassuring, as any confirmation or reassurances adults may attempt to bestow. Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart carries much the same message about the generosity and strength of childrens spirits. It serves as a timely reminder for us all..
