The wit, erudition and stylistic elegance that delighted us in the three previous novels of Sarah Caudwell, who died earlier this year in London, are abundantly at play in her final book, THE SIBYL IN HER GRAVE (Delacorte, $23.95). Thumbing her nose at the conventions of the well-made whodunit, Caudwell ransacks the literary forms that amuse her -- from the English village mystery and the 18th-century epistolary novel to the academic screwball comedy -- to devise an ingenious plot from all the pretty pieces. Hilary Tamar, the sexually ambiguous Oxford don who presides as narrator, delivers his/her customary droll account of the chronic chaos at the offices of the scatterbrained young barristers who provide this series with its raffish charm. Julia Larwood, a ravishing creature who resembles some particularly disheveled heroine of Greek tragedy, enlists the aid of her colleagues to resolve the beastly tax problem of her aunt, a chatty woman whose long letters from her West Sussex village reveal that she and her friends, including the vicar, are parties in a case of insider trading and murder. As the story careers off to Cannes with two of Julias associates, more letters are exchanged, dumping a blizzard of ominous clues in her helpless hands. The humor is wicked, but the intelligence behind it is smart and sweet -- and, sadly, now gone.. In the late 19th century, the ballet company of La Scala opera house in Milan produced the best dancers in the world. Russians adored them. Every version today of The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake harks back to the Italian ballerinas who starred in these works earliest productions in St. Petersburg. When La Scala Ballet made its United States debut in 1981, it had obviously arrived a century late. Wire services may have trained one generation of journalists -- the foreign correspondent Ryszard Kapuscinski among them -- to write tersely. But a younger generation of journalists learned the art of brevity by toiling away in the trenches of magazine margins. Cases in point: Kamp, a contributor to Vanity Fair and GQ, and Levi, who is on the staff of the editorial page at The New York Times, both once worked at Spy and, over the years, have burnished the 28-word-and-under profile to a sheen. (Kamp was also a co-author of The Rock Snobs Dictionary.) In a guide to cinematic terms, actors and more, heres how they describe Robert Evanss life in the 1980s: a cocaine bust, a link to a murder case, a spotty record as an independent producer, an ever more frightening array of tinted eyeglasses.
