Heads, She Won
MR. SPOONS was there. So was the historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., the 70s pop duo Ashford and Simpson and a bedraggled man in overalls who sat surrounded by a brood of plastic shopping bags. The East Side matrons swathed in mink, the graying ponytailed musicians and even the sprinkling of children at St. Peters Church on East 54th Street last Sunday would have made Daphne Hellman smirk with quiet satisfaction. Ms. Hellman, a wealthy, one-of-a-kind harpist who died last August at 86, liked her company as eclectic as possible. The memorials setting, a Lutheran church beneath the monstrous Citicorp tower, made sense after the Rev. Dale Lindh explained that Ms. Hellman and her trio, Hellmans Angels, had often played the sanctuary as part of a jazz ministry. Besides, despite the Park Avenue pedigree and three fine homes (New York, Cape Cod and the North Shore of Long Island), Ms. Hellman was never choosy about a setting, as long as it was big enough to accommodate a harp, her expansive collection of friends and, if possible, a few of her beloved pets..
