NEW PLANTS MAY NOT MEAN NEW JOBS
IN Fremont, Calif., Apple Computer Inc. just opened a new factory that could be a flagship for high-technology manufacturing in this country. The plant manufactures the Macintosh, perhaps the hottest consumer-oriented computer since International Business Machines unveiled its Personal Computer in 1981. Apple hopes that half a million Macintoshes will spill from the $20 million facility by the end of the year, and if early orders are any indication, the estimate may be conservative. Best of all, notes Apples co-founder, Steve Jobs, this is a machine that is made in America, a theme he repeated time and again as he took a promotional Macintosh road show around the country a few months ago.

LOSS SEEN
Apple Computer Inc., battling a fierce downturn in personal computers as well as problems in its own ranks, said yesterday that it was laying off 1,200 employees, more than a fifth of its work force. In a terse statement from John Sculley, president and chief executive, who consolidated his position atop the company in a reorganization two weeks ago, Apple also said that it expected a loss from write-offs in its third quarter, ending in June. Apple spokesmen said they could not estimate the size of the loss, but sources close to the company predicted that the pretax write-offs could total as much as $30 million, giving the company an after-tax loss of $12 million to $18 million. Last quarter, the company earned $10 million, on sales of $435.3 million. We expect these steps to significantly reduce the break-even point of the company, Mr. Sculley said in the statement.

THE OPULENCE OF SINGAPORE
Barbara Crossette is chief of The New York Timess bureau in Bangkok. By Barbara Crossette YOU KNOW, SAYS FRAN cis Siah Ooi Choe, smiling, we still get Americans over here thinking we live under mosquito nets and ill-treat the workers. Independent Singapore and Mr. Siah got started in business in the same year, 1965. BREAKFAST IN SINGAPORE
To the Editor: After reading Singapore: A Repressed City-State? Not in Its Kitchens (Next Stop, Oct. 1) by R. W. Apple Jr., I recalled that one of my most entertaining culinary experiences in Singapore took place at the citys zoo. It offered breakfast with an orangutan. We sat at tables, eating bacon, eggs, etc., and then this beautiful animal lumbered down an aisle holding hands with her young offspring. Ah Meng, the mother orangutan, was seated on a small stage and given a huge bowl of fruit. She ate while taking care of Junior, who, like a human 2-year-old, was restless and wanted to leave. Periodically the mother would, with her long arm, reach out and pull the child back. The best part was going up to Ah Meng, one person at a time, and sitting next to her -- actually touching her -- and having a picture taken. She was so calm and well trained, even with Junior on her lap. The photograph of me, Ah Meng and Junior at the zoo is perhaps my most treasured souvenir. Camille Terracciano Long Branch, N.J.
