In a go-kart, with your rear end a couple of inches off the pavement, it feels like a death wish. If this sounds enticing, then the Rotax RM1 is just the mode of transport for you, a new super-kart that can go 80 m.p.h. in an unmodified version, and well over 100 after a little tinkering with the gears. I never joined the 100-mile-an-hour club. Despite my best efforts, and an afternoon of test drives at F1 Outdoors, a karting track in East Bridgewater, Mass., the Rotax and I remained wary of each other. It wanted to go all out. I wanted to get out. We reached a compromise at about 70 m.p.h. on a long straightaway that wasnt nearly long enough for me. It was educational. There are drivers who really want to go 100 m.p.h. into a hairpin turn. I found out that I am not one of them. But I did survive to tell the tale..
