THE LONG RUN; After the Pain of a Sons Death, A Shared Mission in Politics
In an instant, a world in which everything seemed right suddenly seemed all wrong. John and Elizabeth Edwardss 16-year-old son, Wade, their first-born, was dead, with nothing to blame but the gust of wind that had flipped his car off a wide-open road. Why do our voices sound different from what we and others hear, including our recorded voice?
When we speak, we hear our voice. However, that is different from the same voice when we hear it from a recorded cassette. Moreover, others hear our voice differently. Why is that so, if its the same voice?
Answer: When we speak, we are actually hearing the vibrations in the air and the vibrations within our own head at the same time. Thus the actual 'sound' we think we hear is a little deeper than what is transmitted into the air. Recordings can distort your voice only because of the medium used to record the sound - some of them are better than others. Other people are probably the most accurate judge of our voices, because they are far away from the source (less inherent vibrations) and they don't record it and play it back (less distortion).
Then again, some people can't hear very good to begin with.

How can a talking voice and a singing voice sound so different?
Christina Aguilera has such a cute soft voice when she talks but when she sings, its like woah.
So can anyone sing great while having not jut a good talking voice?
not referring that to Christina, Im talkig bout in general.
Answer: It is mostly the breath support used. When singing, CA has amazing support that allows her to do just about anything she wishes with her voice. Generally speaking though, you do not use the same support for speaking, unless you are a sports announcer trying to be heard over the crowd. I am sure that if she is in a loud room and wants to be heard, she could go in to the same support mode, and be heard with no problems.

If someone has a naturally good voice how much improvement would voice lessons actually offer?
do voice lessons improve your voice even better, like 50% better if one has a pretty nice voice to begin with?
Answer: Yes, they most definitely do. Taking voice lessons helps teach you how to properly use your abs to support your voice, instead of your throat and jaw. I take voice lessons and tension in my throat and jaw is what I have the most trouble with. It also helps with intonation and to improve your range.
I had a pretty good voice, but I started taking voice lessons this past summer, learned a few songs, and performed one at a studio class. My friend, who is a really good singer, told me that was the best she'd ever heard me sing. There was a noticable improvement in my voice, my intonation. I also learned that I was an alto, even though I had been singing first soprano in choir all year long.
Voice lessons definitely help. If you want to improve your voice, they are one of the best investments you can make.

If your voice is bad and you get vocal lessons can it improved and can your voice type?
Can it? Also, could your voice type change from a mezzo-soprano to a soprano, or a tenor to a Countertenor
Also can you post links about the same problems to.
Answer: Of course your voice can be improved, I'm a strong believer that everyone is capable of singing (with varying degrees of success!). You just need to practise. A vocal coach is a good way to go though.
No, you cannot change the type of voice you have. If you practise scales, arpeggios and other exercises that use your top and bottom notes daily you can improve your range by maybe 2 or even 3 notes each end, but you cannot change your natural voice type. The differences between mezzo-soprano and soprano and tenor and countertenor aren't great so improving your range could, I suppose, make you more of a soprano/tenor than a mezzo/counter?

How long should I take voice lessons in order to unleash the full potential of my voice?
I am going to be taking voice lessons soon and I need to know how long should I take voice lessons. I want to make my voice really versatile so I can sing in different genres of music and record covers of other people songs. Any suggestion people.
Answer: It's gonna take tons and tons of practice to unleash the full potential of your voice. Preferably you should practice 2x a day with the different areas of your voice. Of course you're gonna have to adjust to the more advanced work outs. But anyway just stick with it and you'll improve. Don't give up. Good Luck!

How can you tell the difference between a hoarse voice and when my voice is changing?
My voice sounds really bad and I dont know whether its because its hoarse or because my voice is changing. Im 13. When i swallow my throat kind of hurts. And I cant talk loud at all. I have a speech contest soon and i really dont know what to do. First I just want to know if my voice is changing or is it just hoarse?
Answer: A hoarse voice sounds harsh. A voice change sounds deeper with occasional sharp fluctuations.
The sore voice is more closely related to a hoarse voice or sore throat.

Why do our voices sound different from what we and others hear, including our recorded voice?
When we speak, we hear our voice. However, that is different from the same voice when we hear it from a recorded cassette. Moreover, others hear our voice differently. Why is that so, if its the same voice?
Answer: Much as I like Belle's answer, the other half of the puzzle is your brain's interpretation of these sounds. (The same thing is true of vision which is what stage lighting is all about.) Ever wonder why some people are natural linguists and other aren't? Or why one person has perfect pitch while another cannot carry a tune? It is about the brain.
This is in part why singers spend hours training their voice and great speakers rehearse speeches to the point of boredom. It is also why people who have had strokes or were born with an altered brain have trouble conversing. What they hear themselves say and what you hear can be worlds apart.
In a strange way Plato had it right about your senses lying to you.
Hope this helps.

Emmy winner, The Voice starts new season on NBC Monday night ...
The Emmy-winning best reality program starts an all new season Monday night on News Channel 4, NBC's The Voice. It is sure to be an exciting night as The Voice promises the strongest vocalists ever in its fifth season.
How long should I take voice lessons in order to unleash the full potential of my voice?
I am going to be taking voice lessons soon and I need to know how long should I take voice lessons. I want to make my voice really versatile so I can sing in different genres of music and record covers of other people songs. Any suggestion people.
Answer: How long you should take voice lessons depends on how quickly you are able to put into practice what you learn from voice lessons.
As an example, it took me four to five voice lessons before I was able to learn to sing from the mask and to cover the notes in the upper part of my vocal range, so that those notes are less prone to cracking.
That you also want to sing different genres of vocal music means that you will likely be taking more voice lessons than others who choose to learn a specific genre, given the varying techniques of specific genres.
Only your voice teacher is able to correctly determine how well you are singing and the progress that you are making in your voice lessons.

Why does our voice sound different in our heads than it does to others?
People say my voice is really low, and Im always like "Why do you say that?" Then I record my voice and play it over and I sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger! Why do we hear our voices differently than other people?
How did my question get into Astronomy and Space? Oh well, Im sure you guys can still answer my question, haha.
Answer: It does sound different, actually...
When you speak, you hear your voice both as it sounds passing through the air AND as it sounds reverberating through your bones (skull in particular.) The sum of the two different sounds are what YOU hear.
Obviously, nobody else hears the reverb from your skull. So the rest of the world hears ONLY the sound waves passing through the air.
We call these Air Conduction and Bone Conduction and this differing capacity for sound conduction is used in one of the hearing tests we do to evaluate for hearing loss, called the Rhine test. (Air conduction should be greater than bone conduction.)
Neat huh?

How to stop my voice from shaking when singing?
My voice does like a shaking/wannabe vibrato thing.Do you have any tips or exercises to stop this?
This even happens when Im just singing to myself, so its not a nervous thing.
Answer: You need more control when singing. Do you take lessons? If not, maybe try investing in some lessons but if you can't afford them, definitely go onto YouTube and you'll find plenty of helpful tip videos on singing and vibrato, they have videos on just about each aspect of singing. The best thing to help you and is to do some breathing exercises before you start. Don't shake your voice while breathing. This will help your vibrato calm down while you sing. Breathe in deeply and quickly, hold your breath for 7 seconds and then breathe out quickly and hard for as long as you can. Make it as smoothe as possible and hopefully, within time, your voice will get used to this exercise. Try doing scales the same way. Hit a note on the piano and hold it out for 7 seconds almost as if you're breathing. If your voice shakes, try again and again and again. You need to train yourself when and when not to use your vibrato. Best of luck!

'The Voice' Season 5 premiere: Matthew Schuler earns the fastest ...
The Voice” is back, baby, and its Season 5 premiere on Monday (Sept. 23) packed quite a wallop in terms of talent. Case in point? Matthew Schuler and his record-making blind audition.
How different is your real voice from the voice you hear while speaking?
When your speaking the way you hear your voice and the way others hear your voice, is it the same or different? How different is it? Is the voice you hear while on camera your actual voice? I was wondering because my voice seems really different on camera from the one I hear while speaking.
BTW I dont really know what section this goes in, so I am just going with this one.
Answer: You're voice that you hear while speaking and that of what you hear on video or in a voice mail is different. this is because your vocal cords are connected to your ears drums in your head, you get a different reverb and acoustics then when the sound waves bounce of a wall or are recorded by digital means.

Is piano or voice lessons more important for college?
Ive been studying voice for a long time and I absolutely love it, but Ive heard that piano is more important to study in high school if youre interested in majoring in music (which I am, vocal performance) since choir will prepare your voice. I cant take both and I dont want to give up my voice lessons, but I dont want to hurt my chances by not knowing piano.
Answer: Having the ability to play the piano will help you tremendously in music school. It will probably be a required course towards your degree, and it will also help you out with music theory.
There is a very good chance that your voice teacher also teaches piano. Talk to him/her about your desire to major in music, and ask if it might be possible to use a portion (maybe 1/3?) of your lesson time for piano lessons. This would be a "best of both worlds" situation for you!
Best of luck to you!

Why does your voice sound different when played back to you?
And what voice do other people hear? The voice that you hear when your talking or the voice you hear when its being played back to you?
Answer: Other people hear something more like the tape recorded voice. Your voice sounds more resonant to you probably. That's because you hear it after the sound is conducted through the bones of your skull.

EDITORIAL | IN OFFICE; Immigration and the Candidates
Even by the low standards of presidential campaigns, the issue of immigration has been badly served in the 2008 race. Candidates -- and by this we mean the Republicans, mostly -- have been striking poses and offering prescriptions that sound tough but will solve nothing. They have distorted or disowned their pasts and attacked one another - Editorial scores Republican presidential contenders responses to immigration issue; singles out Rudolph Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee as candidates who have changed their views to call for stricter enforcement; praises John McCain as single voice of reason among Republicans; says Democratic field, including Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama vigorously supported legislation that was killed by Republican opposition; holds that bill was flawed, but it contained seeds of true reform
