How does a credit union work and can I join one?
I am curious about them. I dont know if you need a credit rating to join but I do know you need one for loans.
I am currently a full time student. Own a small business so I am self employed. Have no credit rating yet, and have $4,000 I want to put away. (I have more in brokerage fund so I can deposit up to $20,000 if need be)
And I am not interested in loans, just putting my money somewhere other than a bank.
Answer: Credit unions are just like regular banks.
They offer checking and savings.
They may use the name "share draft account" for a savings though
Their fees are generally lower. And they are not out to scam you
A couple of downsides:
1. Lack of ATMs all over the US
2. Their website may not have all the "bells and whistles" a big bank does
3. May not be open on Saturdays
4. May not have 24 hour customer service
No credit rating required.
Check the site for their minimum requirements and fees (if any) for a checking account
No credit rating?
Did you know credit unions are known for doing secured loans at fantastic rates?
I think mine only charges 3% interest on a secured loan (not too sure)
With a secured loan you buy a 1 year cd (minimum may be $1,000)
And you make a 1 year loan against this cd.
Tell the bank what you are doing upfront.
In a year, you will have pretty good credit going
My credit union also offers the highest cd rates I've seen around
(and I have brokerage account that lets you buy cd's from any bank in the US)
Oh, you will be happy with credit unions - they actually do good things for you

How do I start a defensive driving school and what do I need to know about starting a business?
Ive had an entrepreneur spirit for a while and I think I know what I want to do now. I want to start a defensive driving school on Saturdays. After that is established, I would start a behind-the-wheel class. I already know how to market the business. I think I need to start by going to the DMV and getting information and getting certified. What else do I need to know about this business and about running a small business?
Answer: Make sure you have enough insurance coverage in case of accidents etc. And maybe get yourself a good lawyer to handle any law suits that might be filed against you and your school. Good Luck with your new business.
Remember location, location, location.

Classic Sled Hits a Patch Of Soft Sales

Week in review: small business saturday, twitter experiments and more
It's time again for our week in review. Here are the top stories important to your small business this week from the Small Business Trends editorial team.
Which idea do you think would work better or any other similar small business ideas?
Me and my friend have thought of two ideas, and cant fully decide between these two ideas for a small business. Either a car wash where we would find 10 to 15 cars a week to clean, set it up so we would just come clean each of them each week for $50 - $75 for a full inside and outside detail or have a lawn mowing business. Any other similar ideas? We just want something for and hour or two a day on regular days and up to 6 hours on saturday.
Not sure if I mentioned it very clearly, it wont be a full time thing, just after work during the week and on saturdays.
Answer: The better long term business option is the lawn service. The house never moves, and the customer doesn't have to be home for you to perform the service (you can bill or collect later). Grass grows no matter what, especially as you approach and get into the summer. Community deed restrictions require that the homeowner keep their lot cut.
The startup cost to begin a lawn service is 1 lawnmower and trimmer. Continuing costs is fuel.
Costs for a car wash detailing service depends. Hose, cleaning supplies, sponges, rags, a buffer, wax.
If you can, start trying to do both. Which ever you like or the one that takes off, you continue. There are pros and cons to both.

Im thinking of starting a small side business for Saturdays and I like to know how much money people spend look to spend in markets...I usually buy from ebay when looking for a bargin but there are people who go to markets looking for a bargin. Also is it mainly elderly people who visit markets?
Answer: Before opening a business you should do some research.

Has anyone ever used SBF Company to get a grant for their small business?
My wife and I own a small business and we contacted a company called Small Business Funding Company about getting a grant. They ask for $2,600 up front to cover the cost of research and writing the grant. They indicated that we qualified for $180K grant. Weve never used this type of service before and it seems a little too good to be true. Im just trying to find out if this business is legit or not.
Answer: There are many other grants for small businesses that don't require the techniques below, but these are some of the simplest to implement. The following ideas are especially important if you are looking for grants for small businesses in the shortest possible time.
1. Clearly demonstrate public benefit.
This is one of the most powerful ways to obtain grants for small businesses. Almost any small business utilize this technique. Think about your business, or the project within your business for which you are seeking a grant. Is there a way you can demonstrate that you are offering the public, or a specific community, a benefit? There are many grants for small businesses that can demonstrate that their business provides a public benefit.
For instance, if your business sells computers and computer equipment, can you use part of your business profits every year to purchase and donate computers to inner city schools? Can your dental office offer free teeth cleaning to 3 families that lack insurance per month? This is far easier than you would think. I know of a shooting range that received a grant to build a new facility because they were offering "shooting lessons" to young rural kids, regardless of income, on Saturday morning, rather than getting involved in delinquent behaviors.
2. The letter of affiliation.
This is a powerful strategy that can be used in conjunction with a 501c3 non profit organization to obtain grants for small businesses. With this strategy, your small business provides services to a non profit organization, who in turn "co-signs" for the grant you are applying for, stating in writing that your business needs this grant money in order to effectively provide them services. This causes you to become eligible for many more grants than you would on your own (non-profits are eligible for many more grants than for-profit businesses). A good example of this is a client of mine who wanted to purchase sound equipment and open his own recording studio. So he partnered with a non-profit who wanted to use his services and equipment for their fund raising rallies. They wrote a letter of affiliation stating that he actually needed the equipment in order to provide them with this service, which gave him much more of a chance to receive grant money from organizations who only wanted to give to non-profits.
3. Form a 501c3.
Before you write this off as being too difficult, let me explain. It is relatively easy to get 501c3/non-profit status for just one division of your company, which can operate in partnership with your for-profit business. With this 501c3 "division" you will be able to funnel grant money into development, research, marketing, personnel, or any other part of your business that you wish, if you structure it properly.
The problem is, most of the time it takes many months and thousands of dollars to form a 501c3. However, there is an easy way to get 501c3 status that is unknown to many business people and entrepreneurs, within a few weeks at relatively little expense.
I explain in detail how to do this, and many more small business grant strategies on my website http://www.freegrantdollars.com/grantsforsmallbusinesses . Grants for small businesses are very much possible to obtain, but you must know certain strategies and tactics to be able to do it successfully.

What days do businesses give off for the fourth of July?
I am a small business owner and even though I know that the fourth of July falls on a Saturday, do businesses give off the Friday before? Or the Monday after? Or a a half-day of any kind?
Are federal offices closed ok the sixth? (anyone work for the government?)
Thanks so much in advance for your responses!
Answer: It's typically the day that is closest to the actual holiday. So, in this case, since the holiday is on a Saturday, most businesses are observing it the day before (Friday), however next year, since it will fall on a Sunday, it will likely be observed on the Monday following.
Hope this helps!

im 17 and want to start a small side business, any ideas?
I am trying to get a small business goin but cant think of anything, it doesnt need to really bring in loads of money, just enough to pay my needs, but will certainly take loads if came to me!
Answer: -Antique refurbishment This is a perfect side business for people who love antiquing. Take worn-out antiques home with you, invest the time and care needed to transform those old items into something amazing, then resell them at a profit.
-Auto detailing Have a meticulous eye for detail and love to get things gleaming clean? Auto detailing is probably a perfect side business for you. In essence, your job is to make cars sparkle inside and out – and many people are quite happy to pay well for this service.
-Babysitting Got lots of evenings free? Like kids? Babysitting may be a great side business for you. Keep an eye on multiple children on Friday and Saturday nights and you can earn some solid income.
-Bed and breakfast Have some extra space in your home? Turn that extra bedroom into a “bed and breakfast” room. This works particularly well if you have a somewhat older home or live near an area that attracts regular travelers and tourists.
Blogging If you enjoy writing, find a topic you’re passionate about and start a blog on the topic. All you need is a computer, some time, and some energy to consistently write.
Cake decorating Enjoy baking and have a bit of an artistic touch? Learn how to decorate cakes and make them for special events. One of my mother’s old friends does this and makes quite a bit of money on the side.
-Candle making Candle making is a great little craft to learn. You can often easily sell the candles at local shops and also through websites like Etsy.com.
Candy making Homemade candies are easier to make than you think and quite popular. Package them in nice little boxes and sell them through a local gift shop.
-Card making This is another artistic “crafty” angle you can follow. Make greeting/birthday cards from scratch using your own photographs, some blank cards, and a healthy dose of artistic flair. Again, you san sell items like these through a local gift shop or at sites like etsy.com.
-Catering If you love to cook, take the “Blondie” route and start a home catering business. Catering is a business that’s perfectly designed to reward those who plan well and can often fit perfectly into weekends, lining up wonderfully opposite a normal workweek.
-Childcare service Many states allow people to start up in-home daycares with minimal licensing and paperwork. If you love children and have plenty of time and space at home, this is a perfect business to get into.
-Cleaning services for businesses Many businesses and civic institutions have a need for individuals who will provide cleaning services at a low cost outside of business hours. This is a great side business for those who can put in a few hours late at night or on weekends.
Collectible trading If there’s a particular type of collectible that you know a great deal about, you can often make good money as a collectible trader, utilizing tools like eBay and opportunities to find those collectibles in the community. I had some success with this myself with both trading cards and video games in the past.
-Computer troubleshooting I had some success with this in the past, though I’ve largely moved away from it now. If you have a knack for fixing computers, this is a good place to start.
Consignment buyer Consignment shops and consignment auctions are often loaded with good deals if you know how to identify them – quite often, you can turn these good deals around and make a nice profit elsewhere. Get started by visiting some consignment shops and critically evaluating the prices on the items there.
-Cookie making Much like candy making, homemade cookies can be a great seller. Bake the cookies, package them well, and resell them through a local gift shop. Often, you can find people in your social network who will buy batches from you for special occasions.
-Dinner preparer I recently met a woman who earned quite a bit of money as a very part-time chef. Once a week, she would go to someone’s house and prepare a homemade meal for their family, then do all the dishes and cleanup work. This gives the family plenty of together time, while earning the lady some cash in the pocket. If you love to cook, this can be a great opportunity, but you may have to put a lot of work into searching for clients.

How exactly is small business Saturday supposed to help?
Today at Sams Club I limited my purchases to under 10 items so I would be in the express lane, so my business was relatively small compared to others who had their carts full, but how is that supposed to help the economy? If I keep my business small when I shop, that doesnt really seem to do anything.
Answer: Not everyone had time on Saturday to patronize their local small businesses. If anything, it was a free advertisement for all the small businesses in our country.
Local news programs promoted it, and it reminded people like me, who avoided shopping this past weekend, that it's a good idea to support your local small businesses all the time.
Why is this good?
1. The local small store owners are our hard-working neighbors, and not some rich chain-store owner in another state.
2. The government provides small business loans (using our tax money) to help some small businesses get started.
3. When a small business is successful and grows, they hire more staff, and additional jobs are created in our community.
4. When a small business fails, often their creditors lose some of the money owed. This loss is spread around to be covered by others (us.) For example, when a business is bankrupt and defaults on its small business loan from the government, guess who makes up for the loss? Therefore, we want all small businesses to succeed.
Thank you American Express for creating and promoting Small Business Saturday. I cancelled my AMEX credit card years ago because of your poor service, so it's amazing that for once, I have something good to say about you.

How do I start out with my own pressure washing company?
Im tired of working for other people. I want to start my own small business. Gimme examples of how to begin.
Answer: Visit the small business administration web page at sbc.gov .
Buy a power washer. Think about what you could clean with a that power washer. Target promote to people who own the stuff that you could clean with that power washer.
Give up your Saturdays and power wash stuff. Pretty soon you'll have to give up your Sunday's too. Then you'll get to the point that you've saved a chunk of cash and will say screw it, I'll quit my job and start doing work Monday-Friday.
It's rough at first, you'll learn. You may get rich, but you'll definitely get satisfied.

How should I approach my boss about co-workers behavior?
I have been working at a small business (cell phone service provider store/DISH network retail) for about a week now, and I have ONE co-worker. Our boss owns a few different of these stores, and is hardly ever at ours. Well, my co-worker (who my boss adores) is not only overbearing on her personal life to me ( her personal problems, such as custody of her step-daughter, relationship problems, etc.. ), but treats customers like pieces of garbage like it is a "privelage" to be in our store. From what Ive seen, the customer satisfaction rating would be below 40%.
She also has spent a good 2% of her time training me, while being semi-productive, I still have no clue what to do and I start on my own Saturday.
So basically,
How should I go about telling her or my boss about this? I like the job a lot, but I really dont think I could handle all of that if it stays like this.
Answer: Honestly, I have never been in one of those shops and found it any different than what you describe, so why worry?
Anything you will say will be used against you so either change line of work or adapt to your boss's adorable co-worker.

The American Express Small Business Saturday commercial mentions this, and its been driving me crazy. Please help me figure this out! Thank you.
Answer: Hi Lindsey,
Fair question! The name Hugh & Crye is a play on the term hue and cry from common law. The term in its essence is a call to action against an injustice. We're addressing the ill-fitting shirts that mass brands produce, but also their unsustainable sourcing and manufacturing processes. I think AMEX shop small / small business is essentially saying that it's a common mantra for small businesses and startups in the U.S. -- filling a void in the market. Hope this helps!
