Jim Leyland Smokes Out A Winner - Deadspin
From those who consider "old-school" a derisive term, Jim Leyland tends to get a pass because he's just plain old. He's the guy who took advantage of the power outage in Game 3 to light up a Marlboro Red in the dugout.
Who Do You Think Should Be The Manager Of The Year?
I think Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers should, why? he turned one of the AL West "slum" teams into a playoff contending team, also Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers should of gotten nods
What do you think?
Answer: Leyland blew a 7 game lead late in the season, and Washington and the Texas Strangers were never taken seriously by anyone. Joe Girardi deserves it.

BASEBALL ROUNDUP; Rookie Helps Tigers Split a Doubleheader
Jair Jurrjens, a rookie right-hander, allowed one run in five innings yesterday to lead the host Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory against the Texas Rangers and a split of a day-night doubleheader. Marlon Bryd hit two of the Rangers seven home runs in their 13-6 victory in the opener. Tigers Manager Jim Leyland summed it up: Its pretty simple -- - Texas Rangers defeat Detroit Tigers, 13-6, in first game of doubleheader; Tigers defeat Rangers, 4-1, in second game; other MLB results noted (S) - By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

How did the Tigers become so talented so fast?
I realize that Justin Verlander is part of the answer. Dont answer Jim Leyland because I dont think managers make much of an impact in the AL.
Answer: They had many acquisitions besides the manager which helped them get to where they are now. They signed Kenny Rogers in the offseason and he is now 11-4. 2 years ago they drafted Justin Verlander second overall. They acquired Jeremy Bonderman in a trade with the A's. Pudge was a free agent signing by them 2 or 3 years ago. Their front office made the Tigers a first place team by making many good signings and trades.

Why do managers like the worst players?
For instance, Jim Leyland likes Don Kelly, Alfredo Figaro, and Eddie Bonine. Not one of those 3 belongs in the big leagues, and after 1/3 of an inning Figaro blew the Tigers string of 8 straight quality starts, he is nothing short of terrible.
Does your team face these problems?
Answer: Charlie Manuel seems to love Wilson Valdez and Greg Dobbs way too much. Neither player can hit (at least Valdez can field, and Dobbs thank god is gone) at ALL and continue to be thrown out there by Charlie. I just don't get it.

Will Detroit Tigers going to fire Jim Leyland in the next couple of years?
Description:
Now the 2012 World Series is over, Detroit Tigers swept by San Francisco Giants, but if Detroit Tigers will going to down to the last place in the American League Central Division in the future, and then Jim Leyland will be fired as a manager of Detroit Tigers and will be replacing someone else to become a new manager of Detroit Tigers in the future.
Multiple choices:
A.) Yes.
B.) No.
Answer: No.
At his age he will leave the moment he feels that the organizagtion wants to go in another way... and out of respect the owner would allow Leyland to finish out any season he started- and what ever the choice was, there would be a nice pc press conference of a glowing, mutual decison, to move in a new direction.
Bewing swept hurts, but every other AL team would have loved to have had that place in the world series. This was a great year for Detroit Tiger baseball, and like all teams they will tweek things a bit in the off season and come out fighting. Trust me, the Yankees are not getting any better soon. Detroit will be better next year, and have the experience to know what it takes to fight and claw like the San Francisco Giants.

ON BASEBALL; Selig Allows Dodgers to Bypass Hiring Rules

Who else believes the Tigers will start a 3 game winning streak tonight?
I gotta believe because hope is all that we Tigers fans have.
Hopefully Jim Leyland goes over the Tom Emansky Defensive Drills video with Verlander and the rest of the bully today.
Even if the Tigers cant pull it off, thanks to the Tigers for finally giving us a summer of baseball and congrats to the Cards on getting the clutch hits.
I hate it when people say the better team didnt win and if the Cardinals win the WS, they will have proven they are the better team. I just dont believe it will be happening.
The better team ALWAYS wins in the playoffs. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS!!!!
The same people that do not think the better team ALWAYS wins probably believe the Lakers were the better TEAM in 04 when they lost to the Pistons, or that the Rams in SB XXXVI were better then the Patriots.
THE BETTER TEAM ALWAYS WINS!!!!!!
Now, the team with better TALENT may lose in the playoffs, but better talent does not make a group of players the better TEAM.
If that were the case, the NYY would win about 130 games every year followed by Boston then the White Sox.
I am so utterly fed up with people not understanding that a team is not made up of only individual talent, but how that talent works together.
Do you think a team with 25 players that are like Barry Bonds or T.O. would succeed? NO. They may have more talent, but they would lack character and chemistry
the better TEAM always wins. AGAIN, let me restate my points since you seemingly dont understand reasoning!!!!!!
Being a TEAM is not about having the most talent. It is preparation, chemistry, positive roll, negative role, talent, injuries, home field advantage, midst of a road trip, believing hype, underdog status, and a number of other things that place in to which team will win.
You proved your own point by basically stating "Any Given Sunday." Any given Sunday, a team with lesser talent can beat a team with better talent because the team with lesser talent comes out more prepared, hungrier for a win then the team with the lesser talent. It is an upset because the team with the better talent should be better, but it doesnt guarantee they will.
Why are so few unable to differentiate the two?
By your standards, Indy should have rolled through the playoffs the last 3 years, but they were not the better team because they werent as prepared as the team that beat them!
Answer: Fat chance sucka! We got this locked up tonight!
But seriously, both teams have truly made this a great series. Last nights game was intense! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Seeing the Tigers and Cards has made Baseball worth watching again. I'm sick of seeing the same teams over and over again. I loved seeing the Tigers do well this season and wish them luck tonight. No rain! GO CARDS!

Is it just me or do Tigers fans need to man up and understand baseball?
When Gardner slid into Guillen it was not a dirty play. At all. Even Jim Leyland said so. And your little JV pitcher Bonderman wasnt intentionally throwing at Gardner, because he knows that what Brett did was completely clean. So all you tigers fans on here, please shut up.
Answer: Tigers fans like Jake need to understand that sliding into the fielder at 2nd, whether it be the 2nd baseman or the shortstop, to break up a double play, is PART OF THE GAME. It's unfortunate Guillen got hurt, but it's part of the game.

Why do people think The Tigers will fall apart?
There seem to be a lot of people who think that The Tigers will fall apart in the 2nd half.
I dont think they will.
This is not The Tigers of old.
Jim Leyland is working wonders with this team.
If we do have any injuries, we have plenty of people in Toledo that could pick it up.
Are people just plain jealous of our success?
Just curious to know what you think.
Answer: They have a terrific manager and they are playing great. While a lot of people lean towards the Red Sox, White Sox and Yankees because of their experience in post season, this Tigers team with their outstanding pitching could surprise and go all the way! I will root for them.
Category: Baseball
How deep in the playoffs do you think The Tigers will go?
I am confident that they will take at the least the Wild Card.
They have all the experience they need (Jim Leyland).
I think it will boil down to pitching, and with Mike Maroth due back later this month I think The Tigers could take The American League Pennant.
However, if they dont go far I would still happy with what they have done so far.
What do you think?
I am trying not to get my expectations too high. But with the way they are playing, I cant help it.
Answer: The Tigers go all the way and will win the World Series.
They have the pitching, they have the hitting, and above all they have the heart.
If the White Sox or Twins take the wild card, the Tigers will pound Oakland into oblivion (or whoever wins the AL West if Oakland folds, but it sure won't be the Mariners). Then there will be an exciting series against the winner of the AL East vs wild card matchup, which I still think will most likely be the Red Sox. (If it's the Steinbrenners, the Tigers pound them into oblivion instead.) The Tigers will win this, and thus the pennant.
If the Red Sox take the wild card, the Tigers defeat them in an exciting series and then pound the Steinbrenners into oblivion for the pennant.
If the Steinbrenners take the wild card, the Tigers pound them into oblivion and then defeat the Red Sox in (surprise!) an exciting series, taking the pennant.
I don't think the Blue Jays can get in. There is no reasonable probability that the AL West winner will get past the first round.
Now it's the World Series, where the Tigers face the New York Mets for the first time in WS history. (The Mets are the most likely winners in the NL; no other team has a chance of beating the Tigers.) The Tigers win again, in five games. (Six, if Pedro Martinez pitches twice and is at the top of his form.)
And there you have it: the 2006 Champion Detroit Tigers.

Jim Leyland Steps Down: Tigers Seek A Manager - Bleed Cubbie Blue
Will the announcement of the longtime Detroit manager leaving his job affect the Cubs' managerial search?
So what exactly is the problem with Jim Leyland?
What is it Tigers fans dont like about Jim Leyland that fans of other teams arent noticing? The Tigers are doing pretty good in the standings (they have a chance at getting into 1st place if the Yankees beat the Indians, that game a scoreless 0-0 in the 5th right now). 5 games above .500 is pretty good. What Im seeing is the standings, and the Tigers are in pretty good shape right now in the standings, so what is the problem all the Tigers fans on here with Jim Leyland?
Answer: I'll keep my comments to myself about some of the moronic, ignorant answers on here
Coming from an actual Tigers fan:
1. He continues playing guys like Raburn and Inge (who both just struck out in the amount of time it took me to type this) every single day when there's guys on the bench who barely get any playing time like Don Kelly (who is a hell of a lot better than Inge offensively), Ramon Santiago (fields a whole lot better than Raburn) and Danny Worth (was sent to AAA Toledo when Inge came off the DL)
2. He's cocky and doesn't give a sh*t what anyone thinks, he's came right out in interviews and said to fans "Don't question him" because we know nothing about baseball
3. Okay, I can definitely put blame on the players, but when he leaves in struggling pitchers until the other team has a 1-2 run lead, that's partly on him
4. Look at our record every single year. We take a nose dive in the second half every single year. Take last year for example. We were in first place before the All-Star break and we finished out the season at .500. We've been to the World Series once with him in 2006 and got hammered by the Cardinals
5. Sure, we're in the running for first. Are we playing good baseball? No. Look at the division we're in, it's not very competitive.
Speaking of when to sit guys, Inge is hitting .199 with 1 HR, 17 RBI & a .269 OBP -How do you figure starting him day in day out?
In conclusion, he's worn out his welcome here
And part of being an educated fan is knowing the strenghts and weaknesses of your team. Tiger baseball is in our hearts and we want to see more than mediocracy from our team. If our complaining bothers you, no one's holding a gun to your head saying you have to open the questions. Everyone complaining about us complaining is just as bad
Inge is comparable to Jeter? That is one of the most laughable comments I've ever heard in my entire life. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, because I think you're completely wrong.

What manager in MLB has been in his current post for the longest?
I am guessing Jim Leyland of the Tigers, but does anyone know for sure?
Answer: Nope, it's Mike Scioscia, who's managed the Angels since the 2000 season.
Then it's Ron Gardenhire (2002); Jim Leyland and Joe Maddon are tied for fourth, both managing since 2006, but Leyland was "hired" over a month before Maddon was (Oct. 4, 2005 vs. Nov. 15, 2005).
The longest-active NL managers are Bud Black and Bruce Bochy; the Padres got rid of Bochy and hired Black, and Bochy went to the Giants, all before the 2007 season.

Report: Jim Leyland To Step Down As Tigers Manager - Deadspin
According to Ken Rosenthal, Jim Leyland will step down as Tigers manager after eight years. Leyland reportedly told his players after Saturday's ALCS loss to Boston, and will make it official at a news conference later this ...
What criteria do umpires use for ejecting players from a game?
For example, last Thursdays game in Detroit in the 8th or 9th inning (I forgot), there was a major incident where a couple of players got ejected, along with manager Jim Leyland.
Also, how can a manager get ejected? Hes not playing, hes doing his job managing the team from the dugout. Whats to stop him from hanging out there and making decisions?
Also, can someone explain to me what all took place last Thursday? I was still at school, so I missed it.
Answer: I listened to the game, so I'll do my best to explain it.
In the bottom of the 7th (I think) Jose Mijares for the MN Twins threw a ball behind Adam Everett. It was an obvious "message pitch" so the ump warned both benches. (A warning basically means "You do that again, and I'll throw you out.")
In the top of the next inning, Jeremy Bonderman intentionally hit Delmon Young. Because the benches had already been warned once, the ump had to throw out Bonderman. Laird was also ejected as a result of the benches clearing.
Leyland was thrown out for arguing a call earlier in the game. I don't remember what the call was, but the ump obviously (I say that because we couldn't hear it) had told him to sit down, and when he didn't, the ump threw him out. That's why Laird was also ejected. Normally, the manager would be ejected if the benches cleared, but since he was already gone, they had to eject someone else. Laird happened to be who they picked.
It was pretty messy. Delmon Young blamed Mijares for Bonderman hitting him (Young) because it was Mijares' "message pitch" that "forced" Bonderman to throw at Young. And last I knew, Young and Mijares were still mad at each other.
Explain it all?
