BASEBALL ROUNDUP; Twins Get Rays Young for Garza in 6-Player Deal
The Minnesota Twins traded a starting pitcher, but it was not the elite pitcher they are expected to eventually move. What is the purpose of the MLB trading deadline? And why July 31 rather than Aug 31 or Sep 15?
I realize the July 31 deadline is for players to be eligible for the post season. I just dont know why MLB needs such a deadline and why its July 31 rather than earlier or later in the year.
Answer: MLB feels that all divisions are still up for grabs for the playoffs and allows teams to improve their chances of grabbing a spot. July 31 is the magic day as they want to give all teams a fair chance. Players can be traded after July 31 but in doing so, each player up for a trade must clear waivers. Through waivers, any team can pick up a player that somebody is trying to trade. A lot of times there is a gentleman's agreement among teams that no one will pick up on waivers and the trade goes through. You won't see someone of Roy Halladay's caliber go through this though......

What is the difference between MLB Cool Base jerseys and regular MLB jerseys?
MLB.com says both are authentic, but the Cool Base is $45 more. Is there any difference between them? Is the regular authentic jersey less authentic if its not Cool Base?
Answer: It is a completely differerent material very similar to the BP hats and jerseys. There are vents under the armpits and the jerserys are lighter for players to stay cool during the hot months and spring training. Many MLB players wear these during the regular season now but all BP jerseys are Cool base.

Is it dangerous for MLB players to look into the sun to catch fly balls?
The Arizona Diamondbacks dropped two fly balls this weekend while looking directly into the sun to try to catch them. The Dodgers were able to benefit. But isnt this very dangerous even if they have sunglasses on? Shouldnt the MLB and MLBPA take measures to prevent players from having to look into the sun and damage their eye sight? Perhaps they could signal that they cant look for it so its an automatic single? These players could potentially have sight problems later in life.
Answer: The only really dangerous thing for MLB outfielders is if the lose the ball and it hits them on the head. When the Astrodome opened they actually wore batting helmets in the outfield because the ceiling blinded them until it was painted to correct the problem. Jose Canseco was hit in the head with a fly ball but he was a little thick headed so it didn't hurt.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of locating a MLB franchise in Las Vegas?
Every time a MLB team relocation or expansion question appears here, someone usually mentions Las Vegas as a potential city. Would like to hear viewpoints on why Las Vegas is or is not a viable possibility.
Answer: Disadvantages:
Las Vegas is currently the 30th largest metro area in the US, making it notable smaller than a few other cities without baseball teams.
Las Vegas is really a tourist-based economy, not conducive to sports that aren't one-time things.
Vegas' economy was especially hit hard by the recession.
Vegas' connection with gambling (the city wouldn't even "be" a candidate for MLB if it weren't for gambling) makes it unappealing.
Vegas also gets very hot in the Summer...
Advantage: People would stop bringing up Las Vegas as a candidate for an MLB team.

Should MLB consider reducing the ammount of games played in the future?
I think MLB has too many games to begin with. I bet not everyone watches all 162 games that thier favorite team plays. I think it should be at like 120 games that way playoffs can start in September and NFL fans (assuming they also watch Baseball) wont miss too many regular season games. I also believe this will keep MLB fans more involved from day 1 because it will feel like every game counts.
Answer: No. MLB won't do that. Going from a 154 game season to 162 in 1961 created a lot of problems with single season records - Maris vs. Ruth. Reducing to 120 would be unthinkable.
MLB has no interest in coordinating schedules for NFL fans - who was here first?
Very few fans watch 100% of their teams games. Going down to 120 wouldn't change that.
Every game counts now - whether it's played in April or Sept..

How to get discovered by a mlb scout?
I want to play in the mlb one day. Im only 14 so I have time to choose colleges that offer baseball programs. What colleges are major league powerhouses.
Answer: Most d1 schools will help. I'm not an expert but if your a well round ball player your chances increase. And DON'T pigeon hold yourself. I'm on a elite travel baseball team and I can honestly say that I can play any position. Catcher can be difficult if you have never played it. But if you play shortstop, and not anything else, what happens when you get on an MLB team, or minor league team, and they already have a star shortstop? You're screwed. Every baseball player that wants to go pro, or even make college must be able to say "coach, wherever you put me, I can play." Also, a good batting average will help significantly. If you can hit, they'll put you in somewhere.

What is your reaction to Chipper Jones comments concerning MLB umpire Angel Hernandez?
Among other statements he made after the Braves/Phillies game last week, this was a quote from his Tweeter account: "I will not watch a game, any game, officiated by Angel Hernandez! His incompetence amazes me and Im tired of MLB doing squat about it!"
Is this sour grapes or does he have legitimacy in he statement? Hernandez does have the reputation of being very inconsistent with his calls. Your thoughts!
Answer: Mr. Jones retired in October '12 and obviously has too much time to think about the past. He needs to find something productive to do that can contribute to MLB in a positive way.
Hernandez stands alone as the worst MLB umpire. But sour grapes from Larry Jones won't do anything for MLB to battle the umpires union in "doing squat about it".

How much of a MLB players salary is spent in the local city economy in which they play for?
What is the economic impact for the city? Do MLB players spark the local economy?
Answer: Having a sports team most likely stimulates the local economy, but probably not much of it is attributable to what the millionaire players spend locally. Any city large enough to have a MLB ball team probably has plenty of millionaires already and they only have maybe a marginal impact on the market for fancy houses and luxury cars and strippers.
The bigger impact comes from outside tourists showing up 80 times a year to attend games, the wider employment of people who work for the team and the ball park, as well as the outside money derived from TV contracts that is funneled into the team to help fund these things.

What dictates which spring training baseball games are shown on MLB network?
Ill start by saying that I am a Giants fan. Every time I turn mlb network on to watch some spring training, I noticed that it always seems to be the same teams almost every time. The Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, and for some reason the New York Mets. Is this an east coast bias? The Mets are not a very competitive team so it also doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me why I constantly see them on tv as well. Any help?
Answer: MLB wants to show games at 1pm ET. At that time, only the games in Florida are starting. Since the teams that train in Florida are primarily from the east, that is who they are going to show. If they want to show a later game, then they can look at games in Arizona, which start around 3pm ET.
Also, there are more people living in east coast cities than in places like Kansas City or Seattle. So more people want to see the Yankees and Phillies rather than the Royals or Mariners. This is the case with the other major sports as well. This is why you constantly see the New York Giants or Boston Celtics on ESPN.
Is it a bias? Perhaps. The pundits see those teams a lot more often than the teams in the midwest or west coast, so they will talk about them more. Obviously they will talk about teams like the Lakers and Cowboys, but they are the exception.

What would you do if MLB decided to relocate your favorite team?
If tomorrow, MLB announced that your favorite team was going to be moved to a different city and that they were going to start a new franchise in the city where your team used to be, what would you do? Would it still be your favorite team, or would you stay loyal to the city and become a fan of the new team?
Answer: I wasn't around yet when the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta, but from what my grandfather said it was tough to take. Then Selig came around and brought Milwaukee back into the MLB with the Brewers (see Selig's good for something).
I would root forever for the Brewers, but would also support my new franchise. I guess as players started to retire like Braun and Fielder my new team would become more and more important.
Even though I wasn't around when Milwaukee had the Braves, I like Atlanta just for the connection. It seems in a way that they are still partly Milwaukee's team too.

What does MLB plan for interleague play when a team is matched with a division that has the natural rival?
More specifically, in 2013, the New York Yankees will play every team in the National League West plus the New York Mets. Each team will be played 3 or 4 games for a total of 20 games. What does MLB plan to do the year the Yankees are matched up against the National League East, and thus, is already playing the Mets 3 to 4 times? How is the interleague schedule completed?
Answer: MLB will likely plan to maintain the "natural rivalry" and continue to ignore the unbalanced interleague divisional schedules. It's all about the revenues from ticket sales and TV coverage.
Remember MLB had to create two divisions of 5 teams each (AL West and NL Central) to "even" things out.
