What is the difference between a lunar eclipse and the new moon?
What is the difference between a lunar eclipse and the new moon?
As much detail and links helpful!
Answer: Lots of people think that the phases of the moon are similar to lunar eclipses, but such is not the case. The PHASES of the moon---are caused strictly by the percentage of lunar surface illuminated by the sun. That in turn is determined by where the moon is in its orbit around us. Kind of hard to visualize without some graphics help, so take a look at this website for a great diagram and Java applet that shows the whole thing:
http://www.astronomynotes.com/nakedeye/s13.htm
On the other hand, a lunar ECLIPSE happens when Earth is directly between the sun and moon, thereby throwing a shadow across the lunar surface. Incidentally, if you were standing on the moon's surface at that time you'd have one heck of a solar eclipse to look at.

What is the probability of a blue moon lunar eclipse occuring on new years eve?
I read somewhere that a lunar eclipse occurs on New years eve once every 19 years (6935 days) and a blue moon occurs approximately every 3 years (1095 days).
Is the probability of such event occurring:
a) once every 57 years (3 yrs x 19 yrs) or
b) once every 20,805 years (6935 days x 1095 days) / 365 days
ps this did occur on 31/12/09!
Answer: Both a and b are wrong. The answer is roughly once in 146 years (or about 250 or 300 years if you require the eclipse to be visible at a certain location).
First, note that there are about 2.5 lunar eclipses per year. (This isn't the exact average, but is very close.) Since a year contains 365 days, the chance of a lunar eclipse on a particular day is about 1 in 146 (=365/2.5).
Therefore, a lunar eclipse occurs on December 31 about one year out of 146.
How many of these eclipses are "blue moons"? Because the length of a lunar month is 29.53 days on the average (and varies by a few tenths of a day), any full moon that occurs on the 31st day of a month must be a blue moon.
If you take into account world time zones, and that full moons generally occur on two different days (depending on your location), that would increase the frequency.
If you're talking about a particular location, the frequency of about one year out of 146 is correct. However, many of these eclipses won't be visible at that location (because they occur during the day), so the frequency of visible blue-moon eclipses on December 31 is roughly once in 250 or 300 years. If you exclude penumbral eclipses (which are almost invisible), this event becomes a bit rarer.
You're wrong about eclipses repeating after 19 years. You might be thinking about the fact that lunar phases repeat on the same day (give or take a day) after 19 years. This is the Metonic cycle. Thus, if there is a full moon on one date, there will also be a full moon 19 years later (give or take a day). An eclipse, however, does not necessarily repeat 19 years later.

Was there a lunar eclipse on the evening of 2009 Dec 31? That depends on your point of view. If you live in Europe or Africa, the answer is yes. If you live in Asia or Australia, the maximum eclipse happened on 2010 Jan 1 (although it may have started on 2009 Dec 31, depending on your location). Most people in the Americas couldn't see the eclipse at all because it occurred during daylight hours.
The numbers I gave referred to lunar eclipses on December 31. If you're talking only about the evening of December 31 (and not the morning), that reduces the frequency by another factor of two.

When was the last time a full lunar eclipse happened on winter solstice?
There is a full lunar eclipse on December 21, the winter solstice. When was the last time a full lunar eclipse happened on the same day as the winter solstice?
Thanks everyone. I figured it out. 1638 is the last time a total lunar eclipse happened on the winter solstice. 362 years ago. Awesome.
Answer: Believe it or not, the most recent one I can find was on 25th December 299 BC.
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEcat5/LE-0299--0200.html
I was going through the pages of the above site as well as this site for the dates of the solstices http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/seasons.html but the solstice site only goes back as far as 1 AD. You'll have to take my word for it that the solstice in 299 BC was on 25th December at 0825 UT because I had to use a program on my own PC to calculate it. I can't find any other source online.
There was a near miss on 10th December 1685 (Old Style calendar) when the solstice was at 0216 UT on 11th December and the mid-point of a total lunar eclipse was at 2229 UT on 10th December, ie. less than 4 hours before. For most of the world, these two events would have occurred on the same day.
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEcat5/LE1601-1700.html
http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/seasons.html?year=1650&n=0
According to the NASA site, there are 3,479 total lunar eclipses in the 5,000 years between 2000 BC and 3000 AD. The likelihood of a total lunar eclipse on any specified day is therefore 1 in 365.25 x (5000/3479) which is once every 525 years. We seem to have hit an unlucky run with this particular eclipse/solstice requirement.
Later:
Correction. Make that 21st December 1638 (Gregorian Calendar).
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEcat5/LE1601-1700.html
I was fooled by the fact that the solstices web page shows the dates from 1582 to 1752 in the Julian Calendar whilst the NASA eclipse website shows the dates for this period in the Gregorian Calendar. Thus the date for 1638 is shown as 11th December here: http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/seasons.html?year=1600&n=0
but needs to have 10 days added to correct for the calendar difference. The 1685 date (above) is also wrong for the same reason.
NB: The 1676 eclipse was penumbral, not total.

Why does lunar eclipse takes place only when there is a full moon?
During lunar eclipse, the earth is between the sun and the moon in straight line. The moon is in earth"s shadow,so how does a full moon occur?
Answer: A lunar eclipse only happens on full moons, because that is when the Earth is between the moon and the sun. That is what causes a lunar eclipse. It is the Earth's shadow going over the moon causing it to turn a red color ( though it isn't actually red, it just appears that way) but my point is it's the shadow of Earth. You may ask why they dont happen every full moon? The answer to that is because our moons orbit isn't level, its tilted so that in full moons the moon is either under or over the earth's shadow, then every so often it hits just the right spot and there is a lunar eclipse. The full moon is in that particular spot because that is when the sun is shining on the side of the moon that we can see. It gets confusing so i will try to explain as best as i can. The moon orbits us, but it also rotates on its axis. The moons rotation is so slow that it takes as long as one revolution or orbit. So we never see the opposite side of the moon. As the moon orbits us the sun shines on it but only lights half of it, like earth ( thats why we have night on one side and day on the other.) depending on where the moon is in it's orbit we see different places where the light stops (We have a crescent moon when we see the moon at an angel) So full moon is when the moon is directly behind us and we see the whole entire lit side of the moon. Hope that wasn't confusing. I'm sorry if it was.

Would a lunar eclipse occurring in January be visible from the South Pole?
Would a lunar eclipse occurring in January be visible from the South Pole? Why or why not? Would this eclipse be visible from any location on the Earths equator?
Answer: In a lunar eclipse, the earth's shadow falls on the moon. This means that the earth has to be between the moon and the sun. Since January at the south pole means you can always see the sun, during a lunar eclipse, you wouldn't be able to see the moon.
For the same reason, the eclipse would be observable from the night side of the equator, but not the day side.

Do you think that the moon will turn red during the lunar eclipse of June 26 2010?
It will be a partial lunar eclipse and I am wondering if it is enough for the moon to turn red when half of the part of it lies on the Earths umbra.
Thanks in advance!
Answer: This is a partial eclipse and it's not usually easy to see any colouration unless the Moon is completely or largely hidden by the Earth's shadow. In this case, the Moon will be about half hidden, so I wouldn't expect to see much colour. There will be a total lunar eclipse in December when some colour might be visible or it might even be darker than usual thanks to dust from the Icelandic volcano blocking out sunlight.

I missed the lunar eclipse but the next day the moon looked red. Is this possible?
The lunar eclipse was on aug 28 at 4am and i overslept. However at 6pm i was running and noticed a full mood which was red! What is the phenomenon accounting for this?
Answer: Lunar eclipses only last a few hours, and there are no residual effects; the physical state of the moon is in no way altered by the process, so everything is back to normal once it's over. The reddish color you observed was unrelated to the eclipse; it had to have been from conditions here on Earth, such as material in the atmosphere.

How often would a lunar eclipse occur if the moons orbit were not tilted?
1.How often would a lunar eclipse occur if the moons orbit were not tilted? Why?
2. At what moon phase is a lunar eclipse possible?
Answer: Every 29.5 days, at each full moon, since if the orbit were not tilted with respect to Earth's orbit around the sun, Earth's shadow would pass over the moon every rotation, and 29.5 days is the synodic period of the moon's rotation.
A lunar eclipse is only possible at full moon, when the moon is at opposition.

What is the effect of volcanic on the visibility of a LUNAR eclipse?
Does it make the lunar eclipse more or less visible?
May you explain to me how?
Answer: In a total lunar eclipse, the Moon normally remains dimly visible because of light refracted around the edge of the Earth by the Earth's atmosphere. If the Earth's atmosphere contains a lot of ash, light is blocked from reaching the Moon and the eclipse will be darker.
At the total eclipse of 9th December 1992, the Moon was almost invisible thanks to ash from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines the year before. It remains to be seen whether Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano will affect future lunar eclipses, although at the moment it has produced far less ash than Pinatubo.

What is the difference between a lunar eclipse and a solar eclipse?
People said the next solar eclipse is going to be August 21,2012. But the next lunar eclipse may be in many years. What is the difference?
Answer: We have roughly two-three of each kind of eclipse every year, but the difference is, lunar eclipses can be seen from anywhere on the Earth where the Moon is above the horizon (a little more than half of the globe) and solar eclipses need to be seen from more specific locations, only a tiny stretch of the planet will ever be in "the path of totality" for a solar eclipse.
A lunar eclipse is when the Moon passes into Earth's shadow, it turns blood red. If you have clear skies right now, and the Sun is not up yet, you can catch the tail end of this one.
A solar eclipse is when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking out some of its light.
