What lens is best for taking pictures of the moon with my Nikon D5100?
The super moon is June 23rd and I want a new lens for my Nikon D5100 I got for Christmas. I only have the standard 18-55mm lens that came with it. Any help would be appreciated!
Answer: Get a solid tripod and rent a lens. Here is an inexpensive rental:
http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/nikon/lenses/supertelephoto/tamron-200-500mm-f5-6.3-sp-di-ld-for-nikon
The site has plenty of other options that are going to be brighter and/or better optically, but they are more money.
In order to keep the moon sharp in the frame as the Earth rotates, you need to shoot no slower than 30/focal length, so at 500mm, that is 1/15th or so.

What does the Super moon have anything to do with the recent disaster at Japan?
Im sure most of you have heard about the recent disasters that struck Japan. There have been reports stating it may have something to do with a super moon. Super moons are 14% closer to earth, it appears brighter. (I may have it wrong, sorry about that)
Anyway, Im just wondering, how does that collide with the events that occurred in Japan??
Answer: According to most sources around the world, the super moon doesn't have anything to do with the Japan disaster.
The main reason is that the super moon doesn't appear until March 19th. Some quotes to clarify:
"The best evidence that this earthquake was not caused by the lunar cycle is that it happened now — exactly a week away from the date the moon will be full, and almost a week after it was new, the two times that the moon exerts its greatest pull on the planet. A very small correlation exists between full or new moons and seismic activity, because the stronger-than-usual tidal forces caused by the alignment of the sun and moon puts added stress on tectonic plates.
But this quake happened with the sun and moon askew — the time when tidal forces are weakest. Putting aside the fact that the moon doesn't trigger massive earthquakes, blaming this quake on the supermoon is like trying to pin a house fire on an arsonist who is out of town at the time of the crime."-lifeslittlemysteries.com
"The tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan on Friday (March 11) set the Internet abuzz with the false notion that the moon, which will be at its fullest of the year on March 19, played a role in the devastating natural disaster."-space.com
According to some sites you can easily find on google, the reports that the super moon caused the Japan disaster are false.
Not to mention as well, the existence of the "super moon" is debated too-"The seed for the idea was planted by an astrologer, who contended that this large full moon – a so-called "supermoon"– would touch off natural disasters like the 8.9-magnitude Japan earthquake and subsequent tsunami since the moon would make its closest approach to Earth in 18 years. Scientists, however, dismissed the suggestion entirely and now a top NASA scientist is weighing in."-space.com

Did the super moon (perigee) on Saturday night 5\5\2012 look much bigger from the Space Station since the?
International Space Station is 250 miles closer to the Super Moon (perigee) than Earth is
Answer: 250 miles closer is a VERY tiny amount - the moon is 221,000 miles away.
So, yes it would have looked a tiny amount larger from the ISS but you would need very sensitive instruments to detect the difference.
250 miles is 0.00001% of 221,000.

What time is the best time to see the SUPER MOON?
Is the super moon currently showing ?
What time is the best time to see it?
Answer: Well, ..., Tonight's Full Moon will rise in the East at about ~7:34PM in your time zone. The Moon will be at Perigee and it's the closest approach that we've seen on 20 years
Read the article below and here's a short FAQ about tonight's Super Full Moon.
Q) Will the entire world be able to see what people are calling "the biggest moon in the last 20 years?"
A) Yes, the Full Moon at Perigee (Super Full Moon) should be very visible for the entire world. Moon should rise at 7:34 PM EDT (generally the same time for all time zones) on March 19th and be visible for the entire night.
Q) Will the difference be obvious?
A) According to NASA calculations, the full Moon should be 14% larger and 30% brighter that average full moons. Whether the average person will perceive it as such will vary from person to person.
Q) What times are best for viewing?
A) Again, Moon should rise at 7:34 PM EDT on March 19th and be visible for the entire night. If you've got a view directly to the coast, then the full Moon rising form the Ocean should be especially beautiful.
Q) Is this something people may want to ready their telescopes for?
A) You won't need a telescope for this event. Generally the full Moon is so bright that most of the lunar landscape is wiped out by the glare. Since this moon will be 30% brighter the Lunar landscape will be even more obscured. The best times for viewing the moon are when there is a shadow (terminator) on the moon. The views along the terminator (because of contrast) generally offer the
best views.
However, if you still want to get your scope out a look at the Moon by all means do so. As always be cautious, if you suffer from an eye impairment then consult your physician before viewing the Moon. I do recommend using a double ringed polarizing lunar filter to limit the amount of light coming from the moon. However, generally speaking, viewing the Moon is not like viewing the Sun. Other than a little temporary night blindness, the Moon's reflected light should not harm your eyes even if you don't have a filter. However, you should never view the Sun without an approved solar filter as irreparable damage will occur. Also do not use an in-line solar filter (solar filters that screw into an
eyepiece) for viewing the Sun as they can unexpectedly fail.
All things considered, the evening of March 19th, 2011 should be a perfect time to just sit and enjoy the beauty of the largest full Moon in the past 20 years.

Who was the super moon 2011 visible to?
Im studying super moon 2011 for my science report and Id like to say who it was visable to but i cant find any other website with the answer...I know I saw it, Im in Pennsylvania
Answer: It was visible to everyone who had a clear sky (that is to say anyone who wasn't clouded over). As it was a full moon it would be seen at sunset, it would have looked big and yellow/orange at the horizon, which is either an optical illusion or psychological phenomenon and it would have looked like a normal full moon when it was high in the sky.
http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/3d/moonillu.htm
The reason it would have looked orange/yellow is due to Rayleigh scattering
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayleigh_scattering
Those who knew nothing of these phenomena probably went out and saw the moon look big and yellow and assumed it was the "super moon". In reality the lunar perigee of March 19th 2011 was only 0.5% bigger than the lunar perigee of the previous month. The difference in size of the moon between perigee and apogee is 14%.

will the super moon affect pagan rituals?
The super moon on march 19th. Will it be more or about the same in power for pagan, witches and wiccans?
Answer: Any moon-based ritual would recognize the apparent difference in the moon.

@ Barachel Noetic - A "super moon" is a full moon that appears particularly large and bright, because the full moon occurs near its closest approach during its monthly orbit. This one appears about 30% brighter than one at its most distant.
Super moons occur about every two to three months. This one is the closest in 18 years.

Super moon on every 15th of the Chinese calender?
Referring to the super moon tonight, my mom told me this "legend" where every 15th of each month on the Chinese calendar, that the moon would be perfectly round, bright, and bigger than the super moon tonight. I wonder if anyone out there ever heard of this legend. According to the Chinese calender, the next big moon would appear on April 17th. Do you think its true and have you heard of it?
Answer: In China, I'll bet there's a lot less sky glow from Earth-bound lights. In that setting, the Moon will always appear very much brighter. I don't believe it would appear any bigger.

Anybody or Wiccans know any good and simple spells that utilizes the moon?
Maybe the super moon that is coming up will strengthen the spells. I am not wiccan but ever since I read books on how to be a Teen Wiccan and other books it was really interesting and I would like to practice spells that are simple but effective.
If any Wiccans are offended by this I am sorry.
Answer: I think you may have been reading some of the "bad" books on Wicca if you believe that Wicca is about spells. It's not. Let me guess...Silver Ravenwolf?
Alrighty...on to spells. I'm about to tell you something that the horrible, inaccurate Wicca books many teens read don't tell you. If you need to get "spells" from others, you aren't capable of casting a real spell yet. Spells are not like recipes where you get "ingredients" and follow the "instructions" and then *poof!* you did a spell. That just is not how it works. Real spells (which work to create change in the caster's inner landscape in an effort to have the Universe respond in the desired way) are written by magical practitioners and then worked by those same practitioners. You create your symbol set, empower it, raise energy and then release that energy for intention to manifest. If you have not cultivated the understanding of how to focus and raise energy, all the wand waving in the world isn't going to do it.
Here's a link to a page on Wicca and spells that give real information and suggests books that actually teach what real spell craft is about.
http://www.realwiccaninfo.com/wiccan-spells
So if you want to include working with lunar energies in your spell craft, you should learn about what the various phases of the moon create energetically and coordinate the creation of your spell with the moon phase. Many people do spell craft for manifesting on the full moon, do workings for the purpose of diminishing things during the waning moon, and do workings for new beginnings on the new moon, for instance. You will also need to learn what it means for the moon to be "void of course," as it is not recommended that spells be worked during those times.
There are no spells that are "simple but effective" because the spell itself has no power. The power comes from the skill set of the practitioner. A skilled caster can cast a spell crossing the street and no one would know, whereas someone who doesn't have the appropriate skill set can do everything "right" and nothing will happen.
I strongly encourage you to take a look at books that don't have "teen" and "spells" in the titles. Real books on magic and on Wicca are out there. Try reading John Cross for magic and Thea Sabin for solitary Wicca.
